How (not) to pick up women.

Category: humourjkt @ 16:59

Jo and I were shopping in Bromley this afternoon. After wandering around looking at shoes for a while, she spotted the shop Flutterbyes, and wanted to take a look inside.

As you can see from the link, they sell what I would consider ‘girlie stuff’ – lots of flowery, frilly items. They also have a selection of cards.

The cards are very cutsie, with writing like this on the front:
Mum by chance, friend by choice
If Nana’s (sic) were flowers, I’d pick you

I did, however, find one I thought would be good for a friend, so picked it up and went to the counter.

Serving customers were two girls, a blonde and a brunette, both attractive, the blonde especially so.

I opened the conversation with:
‘After looking through those cards you have over there, and throwing up a little in my mouth a bit when reading them, I actually found one I wanted to get.’

The brunette immediately replied with:
‘Her (nodding towards the blonde, who was putting my things into a bag) mum designs those cards. Now, let’s see you back out of this one.’

The blonde just looked at me.

Note to self: insulting someone’s Mum’s artistic talent in the first sentence you say to them is not going to endear you to them.

Homes, work, talking, the weekend.

Category: day to day,employment,householdjkt @ 10:04

I woke up today wondering what to do. I have nothing planned; my diary is empty. Breakfast has been eaten, and I’ve so much energy I may explode. I think I need to go and inflict it on the lovely people of Bromley or Orpington. Probably Bromley.

Last night Jo returned home from her trip and we went to see Inglourious Basterds. Superb film, enjoyed it the whole way through. And I think I’m in love with Diane Kruger. We then come home and watched Touching the Void, before I fell asleep on the sofa.

The work week’s been an odd one. Most of my team in London have been off; the work load is through the roof and keeping up with things is proving difficult. A number of issues have been resolved, and everything’s progressing as it should, it just feels harder than it usually does.

I’ve been far chattier than usual when about my day-to-day business, with people opening up to me more than they usually do. This led to some very interesting conversations with people from all over the world – Italy, Slovakia, Poland, Sweden to name few countries. Great fun!

Jo moved to her place at Canary Wharf this morning. I’m going to miss having her around; she’s fantastic company. I will watch (perhaps write notes on) my mood and sociability levels over the coming weeks and if it’s clear I’m happier living with someone, I’ll (again) think of getting a housemate on a more permanent basis.

Right, onwards to Bromley.

The night that was, then the morning after

Category: day to day,gaming,man-flujkt @ 05:52

Last night I attempted to play a few PS3 games. I started with the weekend’s purchase, Infamous and quickly stopped when I decided I wanted to get back into Fallout 3. Unfortunately, it seems that in the 6 months since I last played that game, I’ve forgotten most of it; so I started in the waste lands, was attacked by nasty raiders, and died.

I gave that up and watched the last three episodes of Entourage before heading to the land of nod (and inadvertently cheering up a colleague with my last facebook status of the night.

Despite some odd dreams (one involving Alex!), woke feeling refreshed. The neck ache of yesterday has gone, along with the joint tenderness and overall ‘feeling under the weather’ that I’ve had since the flight back from Ozora.

The morning’s started well, have finished reading the topic I started on Saturday, meaning I’m now ahead of my lessons, and am making progress through the other book I purchased recently too.

It’s going to be a long day as I’m likely covering both the early and late shifts.

Always on the bleeding edge – upgrade to Firefox 3.5 complete!

Category: geekjkt @ 06:22

I attempted to upgrade to FF 3.5 on the day of release, but a number of key extensions weren’t working (primarily the MultiProxy Switch).

After hearing from a colleague last week that the add-on had updated, I tried the upgrade this morning.

It downloaded automatically, unpacked and installed. It requested a restart of the running application. *boom*, wouldn’t start. Fucking thing.

Found how to start it in safe mode on OS X:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Content/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

disabled all my extensions and try again. Success. Removed all the extensions I no longer use and as if by magic, it’s working. Hurrah!

Only other annoyance was having to reconfigure my proxies as the upgrade on MultiProxy Switch wiped them out, but I took the opportunity to use proxy auto configuration files for each of the connections.

So here I am, on 3.5. Now to see what all the fuss was about.

Learning, learning, busy, fizzle.

Category: employment,productivity,studyjkt @ 20:24

Am learning/studying lots of things at the moment, and feel like I’m nearing brain intake capacity. Had to sleep this afternoon, body didn’t give me a choice; feel much better now.

Watching an episode of Dollhouse before heading to a deep slumber, with the help of Zopiclone.

The next month is going to be nuts. I have Zachary for a week or so, we’re going to Center Parcs (still have 2 bedrooms free in the lodge…). Work’s going to be busy – 64 bit a-hoy; and I have a number of other projects on the go.

I also need to remember to schedule a couple of trips to Austin.

Busy, busy, busy. All good.

NetNewsWire update/fuckup.

Category: geek,rantsjkt @ 07:43

NetNewsWire is the desktop rss feed reader I’ve been using for years. It’s great. Supports nested folders etc, and syncs to their central servers so you can run multiple copies on different machines and see the same information (read states etc). Wonderful.

In a fit of stupidity, they’re changing this to sync against Google Reader.

Google Reader isn’t as full featured a platform as the NNW is, so they’re having to overload some features to provide _some_ support.

The initial upgrade path wiped all my nested folders. Top-level folders are fine, but nested ones are gone.

Not how to ingratiate yourself with your users. I may now be looking for an alternative reader.

Ozora came and went, this is the ‘went’ part.

Category: health,man-flu,parties,relationships,traveljkt @ 18:07

A bigger Ozora post will probably come when I’m in a better place to write it. For now, just know that it was great. I did the whole week without any stimulants of any kind (except sugar) too – a feat I’m very proud of.

Coming back wasn’t so good. The journey home from Stanstead was a bitch – Underground closures resulted in diverts, and it took nearly 4 hours from landing to walk through the front door. Somewhere on route I picked up a head-cold from hell; I feel like shit.

Shortly after arriving home, a conversation occurred which, despite being expected, knocked the wind out of me, and sadly changes a few things which were to occur in the near future.

After a dreadful night’s sleep, and a day of rest, I saw the doctor last night and he prescribed Zopiclone (what a cool name for a drug!) so I can switch off from everything and get some productive sleep. I slept for 10 hours – 8 hours unbroken, followed by another 2. Today I feel much better from the sleep alone, but the cold’s still making my head throb and my voice husky.

Usual form should re-establish within the next few days as I recover from the cold, stoke my mo-jo and establish new plans for the coming months.

Watch this space and send kisses, dancing girls, or both.

Mmm, stiff.

Category: just breakingjkt @ 06:25

Have woken today feeling exhausted! Bedtime was a 2215 affair, later than I usually do and am feeling it – my neck is really stiff. My usual cups of tea aren’t improving things *pout*

Can I go to bed yet?
