Thunderbird – check all folders. Or not.

Category: geekjkt @ 10:07

Following the instructions on Mozilla’s website, I change the following setting in user.js:

user_pref("mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new", true);

The idea is that enabling this option makes Mozilla check all folders for new email – important now that I’m doing more server-side filtering.

Once enabled I had a number of problems:
* After a random period of time, I wouldn’t see the contents of emails. Doing a mailbox rebuild fixed that. But it repeated, frequently.
* It would stop sending emails. I would get error messages when I tried to send.
* The addressbook would no longer work
* Various preference windows would be empty.

Very annoying.

I’ve now disabled that setting and normal functionality has resumed, and I’ve enabled it server-side, so I’m happy. However I’d now like to have the same server-side options configured at work – they’re using Dovecot, not Courier IMAP like I am. Can I find a similar option for Dovecot? Hell no.

Sigh.

iPhone – only show subscribed imap folders.

Category: dear lazyweb,geekjkt @ 06:39

Dear Lazyweb,

Do you know of any way I can have my iPhone only show the folders I’ve subscribed to on my imap server?

I have many folders which I haven’t subscribed to on my desktop client, and I don’t really want them on my iPhone either.

Much love,
Me xx

Dancing Queen – 20090624

Category: dancejkt @ 14:32

After a snatched bowl of cereal for dinner (I was running really late!), I headed down to Bromley Civic Centre for the weekly lesson.

Sandra returned this week, instructing the level2s. She should be back for good now, which is great!

The lesson didn’t start so well – looking around, there were 9 guys and 3 girls; cue concerned looks from a couple of the guys who had the same experience a couple of weeks previously.

We went through some footwork so Sandra could see what standard people were at before moving onto partner work. During this footwork, Deborah leveled-up 4 more girls from the beginners class. Excellent!

We started the choreography, looking at cross body w/men’s left turn, lady’s right, exchange position, two handed lady’s right. Straight forward stuff.

Sandra was in a difficult position this class. 50% of the people had been to many of the lessons (at this level) and are competent in the above moves (and many others), but in the last two of weeks, six or seven beginners have moved up, and most of this is new to them. The obvious options are:
1. Cater for the new arrivals.
2. Target the more experienced people, and have the new people struggle (and possibly get disheartened).

The decision was made to go for option 1, which meant the new people were challenged, and the others weren’t (but everyone got to dance!) Despite finding the class very easy, I think it was the right choice – it won’t take long for the new people to get up to speed, and then we have a fully populated class where everyone’s of a similar standard – a win for all. As the girls rotated, I suggested to some that they attend the level 1.5 class at 1930 which will help them get up to speed quicker. I think at least some of them will.

Roll on next week.

But it’s a fact from Google!!!!

Category: humourjkt @ 11:32

I saw this status today on a friend’s facebook page:

‘fact of the day: Cheetahs can run at a constant speed of 75mph but they can reach up to 125mph wow!’

125mph? That is as odds to everything I remember from infant school. So I googled, checked wikipedia (which has valid citations from multiple published books on mammalogy) and replied:
‘You’re mixing your units.

Their top speed is between 112-120km/h (72-75mph). They only travel for short distances (~450m) at these speeds though because their body temperatures increase to such high levels, continuing would probably cause death.

ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheetah’

A couple of hours later, I got the following reply:
‘I am not i got it from google! FACT’

swiftly followed by:
‘I am not its a fact from google! “A cheetah usually runs a consistent speed of 75mph, but a cheetah has been recorded as running as fast as 125 mph.”
ref (google how fast can a cheetah run and first answer as above)’

When will people realise that just because something’s the top hit on Google, it doesn’t make it true.

Oh, and she’s a teacher.

Further diet changes.

Category: diet,self improvementjkt @ 09:15

I’m writing this here because making decisions/wanted changes public seems to increase my will power and my ability to stick to them.

Like last year, I need a period of cutting sugary foods and other crap out of my diet. The sugar highs are affecting my energy levels more than I like (peaks and troughs), and drinking fizzy drinks and eating sweets are not making my teeth happy. The other crap (crisps etc) isn’t helping my waistline either.

So, what’s out:
1. Sugary/fizzy drinks.
2. Sweets.
3. Shop bought cakes.
4. Crisps.

What’s in: 1. Crop tops 2. Short skirts. – oops, wrong post.

There are a couple of exceptions to this rule: home baking. If I’m offered home baking, or if I bake something sugary myself, I’ll eat it. And I’m not giving up fizzy water.

Already I’m craving stuff. This is going to be tough.

Reflection.

Category: biographical,self improvementjkt @ 17:04

Just after I returned from Peru, I posted that I’d learned a number of things on the trip, but I’d hold off writing about them until I’d processed all the pictures and written most of the posts. Well, I still need to write about the Inca trail, but here goes anyway.

This is what I learned about myself while away (some of which I’ve already addressed)

1. I eat far too much. We were hiking for around 8 hours a day, and ate small, but healthy, portions of food. The food provided was more than enough to sustain us for the trek. To compare, I would think nothing of eating 500g mince with spaghetti for dinner (to myself). Given my fairly sedentary lifestyle, this is obscene.

2. I love reading, but most things I read these days are in the form of ebooks/pdfs, and trying to read while on a laptop doesn’t work, as in inevitably I’m chatting online, or responding to email too. I need to make more time to read for pleasure, and available in a form which doesn’t require my laptop turned on.

3. There is no need to fill the silence. Sometimes it’s really good to be sitting with a group of people, and not have anyone say anything. While in the Galapagos, there was a time where all seven of us were on the deck of the boat. We’d been swimming with sea lions, and were now sailing between the islands and we all sat there, enjoying our surroundings, in silence, for probably twenty or thirty minutes. It was beautiful.

4. Anything I want to do, I can. And if I want to do something then I should do it to the best of my abilities, anything less is a disservice.

Only four things, but important ones to me, anyway.

Since returning, I’m adjusting my eating habits and being restrained in what I’m consuming; I have even been keeping a diary to shame me out of eating too many unhealthy things. So far, it’s working.

I’ve purchased an e-book reader too, so I can read all I want, without going near a computer other than to upload the e-books. It’s great.

And I’m spending more of my time in quiet mode, and am taking up some hobbies.

Life is good.

Photos, photos, where should they go?

Category: dear lazyweb,picturesjkt @ 18:58

Due to recent travels, I’ve been in a position where I’ve wanted to share photos with various people: friends, family, others, etc. This last batch, I’ve uploaded to Facebook.

The key benefits of Facebook are: Most of the subjects are on facebook, you can tag photos, you can comment on them, the interface is reasonable to use.

There are however downsides to Facebook too: Not everyone has an account (though you can email a public link), and key, especially for my Inca shots, the photos are resized to about 600×600, which considering they were originally 10MP pictures, is crap.

Flickr on the other hand allows you to upload full size (or at least, much bigger than Facebook), allowing people to download a high res image for their own use. The downsides are that they can’t be tagged, and also they require special advertising to friends as they’re not announced on a feed.

I’m leaning towards publishing them in both places, but wonder if anyone has other suggestions I may not have considered.

Comments, suggestions, opinions, all gratefully received.

Dancing Queen – 20090616

Category: dancejkt @ 14:29

Yesterday, our usual salsa lesson had been taken over; we were to be taught Bachata instead.

While people who had danced it before were taught by some guest dancers (trying to find their names from old emails, but failing), the beginners were to be taught by Imogen.

Imogen was my first contact in Salsa. When I was looking for a teacher, a Google search came up with her. She wasn’t in a position to take on personal clients, so pointed me in Mark’s direction. The rest, as they say, is history :). She’s also always behind the deck on Tuesday. This meant that until last night I had never, ever, seen her dance. I was beginning to wonder if she could…

Anyway, the lesson was packed. I estimate around 40 people in the beginners class, and roughly equal numbers of men/women; a good crowd.

We learned the very basics: side stepping, back and forward, and a couple of turns (the ‘basket turn’, and a 360 to the left and right (for both) and a 360 alternating m/w led by the man), putting them together into a routine.

Despite a few wrong footings, I got most of what was being taught. It was fun.

The music they had playing, compared to the salsa, has more bass. And I enjoyed it more (perhaps that’s a throwback from the years of clubbing to doof doof?), though the dancing has far too much wiggling for my liking :)

It was commented, again, that I never hang around for social dancing afterward, and I used the same, ‘it’s my work’ excuse. That’s true, but there’s hesitation in asking work for an occasional late start due to lack of confidence in my dancing abilities. In a classic catch-22, it’s almost certainly the practicing which will build the confidence. I need to do something about that.

Oh, and yes, Imogen can dance, and do a decent closed-partner hold when 4+ months pregnant. Impressive.

By the power of iPhoto and the Facebook Photo Exporter plugin, I present to you:
Peru – Before the Inca.

If the (Inca) Gods continue looking down on me in a favourable way, I may have the rest of the photos up in the next couple of days…
