Dancing Queen – 20090324

Category: dancejkt @ 09:08

A quick update this week, and this is the likely format from now on.

Mark’s class:
We concentrated on solo work, footwork to do when you’re separate from your partner. The routine for this was;
Double cross over, right turn, slide, 2 x spiral kick.

Put into a full routine, so it flows, we have:
Mambo, cross body open, lady’s right turn on the 5, with the hand being released, then the double cross, right turn, slide, 2x spiral kick.

What’s interesting this week is the guys picked it up easily, yet as we rotated, 3/4 of the women made comments about having no idea what they should be doing! I said they should say something to Mark, but they all said, and I quote, ‘no chance’. So I asked for a repeat; no point in people being in a class and not getting to grips with what’s being taught.

Sandra’s class:
Started with footwork practice, always useful – especially regarding the solo work we’d just been learning with Mark – and it allows the people who just come to this class to warm up and get into the flow :)

A good flowing routine this week, very enjoyable to learn:
Mambo, one for her, cross body inside pivot turn, right hand turn (m), right hand turn (f), mambo, cross body outside turn with a turn on the 6, right hand turn (m) w/hand switch behind the back, break, into an accent (f), then inside pivot turn, mambo.

So another excellent week, and I left feeling refreshed and very happy. I’m sad to be missing the next two weeks due to a work trip to Austin, but perhaps I’ll attend a class or two there.

Seven pounds.

I watched Seven Pounds last night.

To quote imdb:
‘An IRS agent with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.’

I’m not sure what it was about the film, but I had an allergic reaction to my cats during it, resulting in them watering slightly :)

Dancing Queen – 20090317

Category: dancejkt @ 19:56

Having missed last week’s lesson due to over-exertion at the weekend, I took a cheeky private on Monday evening. The purpose of this was two-fold: to consolidate what I’ve learned in the last few weeks, and to get an understanding of where my lead was weak (a critisism I received from one of the other students last class.)

That lesson went very well, and after a review of various moves, went onto pieces which I’d struggled with before Christmas. Happily, those have clicked too.

Fresh from that positive session, I attended the group classes, taught by Mark and Sandra from London Salsa, last Tuesday.

Mark’s class, Bridging The Gap, was first. There was a low turn out this week – perhaps 10 people in total – which was great. I can’t for the life of me remember the routine we did; will update later, if I can recall.

By the time Sandra’s class started, the hall was packed! There there about 25 people in hers, with even more than that in the beginners. A number had come up from the beginners class, and as such, the standard of dancing was variable.

The routine we learned was:
basic, cross body, 360, RH turn (f) going into a 180 turn turn (m), hand place on the shoulder, then a break, into a variation on the cross body, then a head comb, ending on a basic.

The lead on the break into the cross body didn’t feel natural for a while, though by the end of the night, it was down to pat.

For some reason, I was in a fantastic mood for the class (more so than usual!) and had an abundance of energy, so decided to stay on and do some social dancing after; practice the routines some more, try out some new stuff. I got home around 11pm. Work hurt the next day :)

Food. For one.

Dear Lazyweb.

I’m a single guy, and I live alone. My diet is pretty typical of a single guy who lives alone: pasta, beans on toast, pie + pots + veg, chicken + jar of sauce + rice etc. Pretty boring, and not all that healthy.

While I enjoy spending hours baking, the thought of spending hours (or even an hour) preparing and cooking a meal, after I’ve been working for 10+ hours, doesn’t fill me with as much joy as you’d expect.

What do you cook after a day at the office, which is both yummy, and healthy? My only real restriction is that I dislike fish, so no fishy goodness.

TIA.

So this is what my hair looks like at the moment:

I clearly need a haircut, but what should I do? Suggestions in the comments, please.

Samsung NC10 – After one week.

Category: geek,man toysjkt @ 08:11

I’ve been using the Samsung NC10 for about a week now. I use it primarily on the train, and occasionally in the office, having started leaving my MBP at home each day (the NC10 is far lighter).

After first booting to Windows XP Home (the pre-installed OS), I built a USB key containing Ubuntu 8.10 and within the hour, I was using a shiney, portable, primarily linux based laptop.

Having used nothing but macs for the past 2.5 years, it’s taking some getting used to the slightly rearranged keyboard; I’m resisting the urge so far to remap the keys to something more sensible.

I followed the community notes and upgraded the kernel to the release currently in the Jaunty repository, modified a few config files, and now everything’s pretty much working – the function keys (which control volume, screen brightness etc), sound, the ridiculous initial mouse sensitivity. It’s all good.

Surprisingly, I plugged in my USB 3g modem stick, and it was automatically detected, and after clicking a few buttons in a wizard, I was connected. How things have changed since I last properly played with linux!

The battery life has been stellar, averaging over 4 hours between charges. If its ability to play videos is good, it’ll be replacing the MBP on long distance flights!

If you’re in the market for a netbook, IMO, the NC10 is a very good choice.

Dancing Queen – 20090310

Category: dance,videojkt @ 08:50

No dancing this week, decided to stay in and get some more rest after the weekend’s excitement. I replaced Bromley Civic Centre with an evening of Desperate Housewives; am nearing the end of season 4, and things are hotting up!

Umphf

After a better-than-expected start to the day, I peaked at around midday and the word ‘melancholy’ is a good description for this afternoon’s feelings.

The weekend was fantastic, and the write up deserves more enthusiasm than I’m able to muster up at this moment. I may do it tomorrow.

In other news, my arm still smells like assholes.

Master of disguise

Category: geek,picturesjkt @ 10:08

On Friday, I started work on a tattoo I’ve been thinking about for the last few years.

About 11 years ago, one of my decisions resulted in me being left with a large scar on my left arm. While I like the scar, over the years I’ve become tired of explaining it to people who are usually shocked by what they hear.

More recently (read: last two to three years), I’ve become very self conscious of it, and cover it up when ever I’m out in public. My previously thick skin seems to be thinner these days.

I spoke to Steve early last year about how to minimise the visual impact of it, and he thought some dot work could be used to good effect.

Roll on more than a year later, I pull my finger out to get an appointment. It was Friday.

I arrived early, and did what any normal geek would do while waiting to be tattooed – I fixed their wireless network. Steve came out shortly after to show me the design he’s been working on – it’s based around geometric 3d shapes with one side shaded. The other sides will have dot work.

After only the outline was in place, you could barely see the scar it’s hiding. Once the solid black work was done, it was further disguised.

The inking itself was, as usual, pretty painless, though as I was sitting up, there was no opportunity to fall asleep :)

I’ve another two hours booked in a fortnight, after we’ve seen how well the scar holds the ink (I’m noticing some spreading already). I’m hopeful it’ll be a great success.

For those of you who’ve not seen the facebook photos, one taken with the JesusPhone:

Snap, crackle, crunch.

Category: healthjkt @ 08:59

After several years of aggravation, I finally made the necessary arrangements to have one of my molars removed.

It was damaged years ago, and was sporting a lovely crown, however occasionally I would get a swelling in the gum above, and this would push the crown proud of my other teeth. Unfortunately, this meant whenever my teeth came together, it hurt like buggary.

I’d been given the option to remove it about size months ago, but as it was only playing up once a year, I chose to keep it in – I do quite like my teeth. More recently though it was playing up frequently, so it needed to go.

I don’t mind dental work usually; I can normally relax into the drilling and whatever, but it’s deeply disconcerting to hear the roots of a tooth being broken from the jaw structure.

But it’s gone now. Despite accidently trying to chew a big lump of chocolate where the tooth used to be (ouch!), it’s been painless. And the dentist told me I could drink while taking the antibiotics she prescribed. Win.
